"Schill" is the Low German term for mussels and means shell or skin.

Together with the word "Hörn", which means hook of land, mussels – "Schill" – are what give the small headland Schillighörn its name. The bathing resort of Schillig goes back to around 1860, when its guests stayed at the lighthouse keeper’s and in surrounding houses.

As the Germans’ wanderlust grew, an increasing number of people found the peace and relaxation they needed on the North Sea beach. Schillig has been a recognized North Sea spa since 1985. Thanks to its location in the northeast corner of the East Frisian peninsula, Schillig is the ideal place to spend some relaxing days by the sea and from which to take trips into the Frisian hinterland.

Wilhelmshaven, the German navy’s main base on the North Sea, invites you to explore its many maritime attractions. Frisia’s famous beer is brewed in Jever and Emden is the home to top-class art exhibits. One look at the large cruisers in Papenburg evokes thoughts of the Caribbean. And let’s not forget the ever-changing landscape under a seemingly never-ending sky.
